Victims of Sexual Abuse

Contact Us

Challenges Victims Face

  •  Stigma and Shame: Many survivors feel ashamed or blame      themselves, making it difficult to seek help.

  • Fear of Retaliation: Fear of retaliation from the abuser or      others can prevent survivors from seeking therapy.

  • Emotional Struggles: Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), anxiety, depression, and suicidal thoughts are common after sexual abuse.

  • Healthcare Utilization: Some survivors may face increased healthcare utilization due to physical injuries or mental health issues.

  • Health-Risk Behaviors: Coping mechanisms, such as substance use or self-harm, can further complicate recovery.

Benefits of Equine Assisted Psychotherapy

 · Restorative Environment: Participants in EAP often experience the equine therapeutic environment as restorative. Being outdoors and interaction with horses creates a unique and calming atmosphere.

· Positive Emotional Experiences: Working with horses can evoke positive emotions, providing a contrast to the trauma survivors have endured. These emotional experiences contribute to healing.

· Increased Insight and Awareness: The nonverbal communication with horses allows survivors to gain insights into their emotions and reactions. Horses mirror human behavior, helping survivors become more self-aware.

· Improved Relationship Skills: Building trust and connection with horses can translate to improved relationship skills in survivors’ interactions with others.

  Safety and Trust

  • Victims of sexual abuse often struggle with trust issues.
  • EAP provides a safe, nonjudgmental environment where victims can build trust with horses.
  • Horses are sensitive and intuitive, allowing victims to       experience trust and connection.

Empowerment and Boundaries

  • Victims may feel disempowered after abuse.
  • EAP activities (such as grooming or leading horses) empower victims to set boundaries.
  • Learning to communicate assertively with horses can translate to human relationships.

Emotional Regulation

  • Trauma can lead to emotional dysregulation.
  • Interacting with horses helps regulate emotions.
  • Victims learn to manage anxiety, fear, and anger through these interactions.

Symbolic Healing

  • Horses symbolize strength, resilience, and healing.
  • Victims can project their feelings onto horses, facilitating       emotional expression.
  • The bond with horses becomes a powerful metaphor for overcoming trauma.
